"Don’t give up. Don’t be a statistic. Growing up in South Tucson, my high school was very well known for teen pregnancy, high school dropouts and students never making it to college. I love that I’m breaking that statistic."
About Carlos
Growing up, Carlos couldn’t see a future for himself in South Tucson. So, he broke out of his comfort zone to attend college at Arizona State University.
He decided to study business with a focus on Spanish language and culture in hopes of becoming an interpreter within the business sector.
“Ever since I was young, I’ve loved interpretation,” said Carlos. “I love being that bridge between a non-English speaker and a non-Spanish speaker. I like being able to help people get their point across.”
School is possible for Carlos because of a Pell Grant and scholarships from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and College Success Arizona.
“Prior to receiving the scholarship, I had to take out loans and I had to work two jobs, just to be able to meet my expenses,” said Carlos.
